Manchester United v West Ham United – Emirates FA Cup fifth-round – Old Trafford – Tuesday 8pm – Preview
Brian Dear confirmed that West Ham United must produce a better performance if they are to make further progress in this seasons Emirates FA Cup.
The Hammers head to Old Trafford and will face a Manchester United side still considered title contenders, despite question marks over their defending again arising following Sunday’s 3-3 draw with Everton.
Meanwhile, West Ham provided a slightly subdued dispaly of their own in earning a share of the spoils at struggling Fulham.
“We weren’t at our best and will need to improve against Manchester United,” Dear told Yellow Sport.
“The point and a clean sheet were great, but we were on the back foot during the second half. I know Fulham are a better side than their league position might suggest, but it goes without saying, that sort of performance won’t be good enough to beat United.
“Obviously, it’s a boost that Tomas Soucek is available. His sending off was one of the most ridiculous decisions I’ve ever seen and confirmed that VAR has actually caused more problems than it has solved.
“With him in the side, we have a goal threat. If we can find the sort of performance we showed at Villa Park then we can match United. I suspect this one might go al the way, perhaps with penalties deciding the outcome.”
Dear added: “I know West ham are far from the finished article, but to get an away point in the Premier League when not at our best is further proof that we are heading in the right direction.
“Another step forward would be cup progress. Knocking out Manchester United would be a real statement of intent, lifting the spirit and morale further in what has already so far been a decent season.”
Brian Dear’s prediction: Manchester United 1-1 West Ham United
Jeevesie’s prediction: Manchester United 1-0 West Ham United
