Brian Dear: Why do we continually look so fragile?

West Ham United v Leicester City – Preview:

JORDAN AYEW’S late goal at Selhurst Park condemned West Ham United to their ninth Premier League defeat of the season, leaving Brian Dear wondering why Manuel Pellegrini’s men are continually so defensively frail?

Palace’s victory left West Ham precariously one point and a single place above the relegation zone, and with high-flying Leicester City next up at the London Stadium, things certainly are not getting any easier.

“We have spent good money on defenders, but we never seem to get it right,” Dear bemoaned to Yellow Sport.

“Five clean sheets in nineteen games is really poor. Roberto has taken a lot of stick, but it needs to be shared around – it’s not been good enough!

“This hasn’t just happened either, how often have we looked solid at the back over the last few seasons? We have brought in experienced players to do the job, but they never seem to be the right fit once the team is pieced together.”

Looking ahead to Leicester’s visit, Dear added: “We might be lucky – we might have caught them at a bad time. They have only picked up one point in three matches and with Manchester City and Liverpool both beating them quite comfortably, their faint hope of the title are all but over.

“But they have bags of pace, which I’m not sure we can cope with. Also, they will be keen to get a win under their belts and ensure they claim a Champions League place.

“Make no mistake, West Ham are in a relegation battle and with January coming up any move into the transfer market has to be watertight. We are out of form while the teams around us are largely winning.

“I’ve tried to be as positive as possible in recent weeks, but I’m not overly confident about this one and think we could be licking our wounds again come the final whistle.”
