Brilliant Billericay stun Ipswich in cup cracker

Billericay Town Women 2-1 Ipswich Town Women

Billericay Town Women produced a stunning performance to see off Ipswich Town in a highly competitive Vitality Women’s FA Cup second round tie at New Lodge.

Despite playing in an empty stadium due to lockdown restrictions, more than 3,400 fans took to the Blues YouTube Channel to catch the action.

Anna Grey thumped Ipswich into the lead just before the half-hour mark with a strike from 30-yards. But Billericay levelled within minutes – Therese Addison turning on a sixpence before rifling home from the edge of the box.

Molly Sutherland had the ball in the net for the visitors but was thwarted by an assistants flag. Meanwhile, Zoe Rushen hit the woodwork as the two sides continued to trade blows.

But with four minutes remaining, Addison grabbed her second of the afternoon to send Billericay through and spark wild celebrations.

Speaking after the match, Billericay boss, Scott Chickleday enthused: “I’m lost for words, to be honest with you.

“I thought we were quality all over the park. Therese was top-draw again – two good finishes. But I think it would be a bit unfair to say that she was the star player today because the whole team were the stars of the show.

“The whole squad – the girls that came on from the bench – from Ammy at the back – I just thought we were absolutely phenomenal today.”

Meanwhile, Billericay Head of Women’s & Girls Football Kim Coster told Yellow Sport: “It’s a fantastic result for the women and the management team. I‘m so pleased that the game was streamed for both sets of fans.

“Now we look forward to facing Oxford away next week.”
