Yorkshire: 425/5 (125.0 overs)
Yorkshire won the toss and elected to bowl
Yorkshire lead Essex by 22 runs with five first-innings wickets standing
Harry Brook continued his terrific early season form, leading the way as Yorkshire’s batters enjoyed the better of proceedings on day three of their LV=Insurance County Championship Division One encounter with Essex at The Cloud County Ground.
Incredibly, Brook has scored fifty or more in each of his innings this season. He had reached 110 by the close of play, having faced 122 balls, hitting eleven fours and two 6s during 178 minutes at the crease.
Dawid Malan was also amongst the runs, joining Brook unbeaten on 87. Meanwhile, outgoing England skipper, Joe Root reminded the Chelmsford crowd of his undoubted class with 75 off 112 balls before he was removed off a delivery from Matt Critchley.
It proved to be a tough day at the office for the Essex attack who appeared to have the upper hand when Yorkshire had resumed their overnight tally of 81/3. Sam Cook’s 2/65 provided a flicker for the hosts in a match that now seems destined for a draw.
Earlier, 107 from Alastair Cook, coupled with Paul Walter’s maiden first-class century appeared to give Essex the upper hand. Walter wooed the home crowd with a knock of 141 off 322 balls, including a 174-run third-wicket stand with his fellow centurion, Cook.
