Chesterfield v Southend United – Emirates FA Cup first-round – Technique Stadium – Report
Chesterfield 3-1 Southend United
Southend United’s troubled campaign continued as Vanarama National League rivals, Chesterfield put pay to their hopes of an Emirates FA Cup run at the Technique Stadium.
But this first-round tie had all started so well for the Blues. Looking to build on Tuesday evenings league victory over Dover Athletic, frontman Rhys Murphy netted his third goal of the week after Sam Dalby had superbly played him in.
But the Blues lead was swiftly extinguished. Saidou Khan heading home a pinpoint Calvin Miller centre in only the sixth minute.
And within a quarter of an hour, Chesterfield was ahead. Luke Croll reacted the quickest after stopper, Steve Arnold had rebuffed Jak McCourt’s initial attempt.
Blues continued to put up a fight, but the tie was put beyond them eleven minutes f4rom time when Spireites substitute, Kabongo Tshimanga slipped through before beating Arnold with a neat finish.
That wasn’t the end of the drama. Firstly, Blues passed up an opportunity to reduce the arrears when Dalby fired a spot-kick high over the bar after Melvin Minter had bowled over Zak Brunt.
Brunt found himself in hot water, sent off after a skirmish with Calvin Miller in the seventh minute of stoppage-time.
Southend United now turn their attention to the Vanarama National League when they face Woking at Roots Hall Stadium on Saturday, November 13 (3pm).
