Wakering Walking Football Club’s over 65s moved into second place in the Essex Walking Football League following the latest round of matches to be staged at Billericay Town’s New Lodge ground.
The villagers won three and lost one of their four fixtures. the opening match, a defeat at teh hands of Chelmsford City.
Wakering enjoyed much the better of proceedings. However, a stunning performance from the Clarets goalkeeper kept the contest on a knife-edge.
And with time running out, a long ball forward caught Wakering cold. The ball crept in off the foot of a post to secure a single-goal success for City.
Nevertheless, Wakering hit back in their next fixture, seeing off Paringdon Pirates by a goal to nil and avenging the 2-0 defeat they suffered in the opening round of matches against the same opponents.
Hosts, Billericay proved no match as Wakering then swept to a resounding 5-0 triumph. The round concluded with an altogether tougher test against a well-drilled Leyton Orient side. Wakering eventually won by the odd goal in three.
Jim Butterfield topped the scoring chart for Wakering, scoring four times during the day. they return to action on June, 14 at Billericay Town Football Club when they face Chelmsford City, Billericay Town and Eastwood Falcons.
