Butterworth fires a warning shot at under-performing Rovers

Felixstowe & Walton United v Great Wakering Rovers – Emirates FA Cup First Qualifying Round – The Goldstar Ground – Saturday 3pm – Preview

Great Wakering Rovers manager, Steve Butterworth has sent a clear message to his under-performing charges ahead of Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup First Qualifying Round trip to Felixstowe & Walton United.

While the Rovers made cup progress at the expense of Heybridge Swifts, their Pitching In Isthmian League North form has been poor – Three defeats leaving the villagers at the foot of the table without a point to their name.

Coming off the back of their most recent reverse, a 4-1 hammering at the hands of Basildon United, Butterworth suggested the cup offered some solace: “I’m looking forward to the game because it briefly takes us away from the league pressures and offers something different,” the Rovers boss told Yellow Sport.

“It’s a one-off game. We have an opportunity to progress and boost the clubs’ coffers at the same time.”

Nevertheless, Butterworth fired a warning shot at his squad, adding: “I can’t keep making excuses for the players.

“We need to turn the corner or changes are going to be made. Currently, we aren’t performing to the levels I expect.”
