A build-up of litter is “choking” Rainham Creek as Havering Council staff say they cannot keep it clean and safe without specialist help.
At a full council meeting in March, the Independent Residents’ Group called on council leaders to “take action” to clean the creek, particularly near the Angel pub in Bridge Road.
However, last month, councillors on the environment overview and scrutiny committee heard council staff had been unable to clear it using boats and nets.
Officers explained that “more needed to be done” to solve the problem and suggested the council employ a specialist contractor to clean the creek on an annual basis.
Members of the committee questioned whether the clean-up should be scheduled for every second year instead in order to save money.
A final decision about whether and how frequently to employ a contractor will be made at the next cabinet meeting, scheduled for September 15.
