Campbell counting the cost ahead of Gills visit

Southend United v Gillingham – Roots Hall Stadium – Sky Bet League One – Tuesday 7:45pm

Southend United v Gillingham – Preview:

SOL CAMPBELL will again have to rely on a threadbare squad for Southend United’s Sky Bet League One clash with in-form Gillingham at Roots Hall Stadium.

With new arrivals yet to materialise, the thin Blues line was further damaged with the loss of goalkeeper, Mark Oxley, who was replaced with a thigh injury in the final minutes of Saturday’s home defeat to Coventry City.

Having so many injuries and the lack of players coming in, and with players leaving, of course, it’s natural that it’s going to draw a lot more energy from the players that are here,” Campbell bemoaned.

“The games are thick and fast, and not everyone can recover from the Saturday to the Tuesday.

“Of course, it’s going to take its toll, but we’ve got to dust ourselves off, make sure we can train in the right way and recover in the right way and go again.”

Teenager, Callum Taylor replaced Oxley for his Football League debut: “We’ll see how [Oxley is] by tomorrow or Monday but it could be a week, a few days, two to three weeks, I’m not sure. It was his thigh,” Campbell explained.

“That’s the situation we see ourselves in as a club, but we’ve just got to look at other scenarios. maybe we could get an emergency loan – I don’t even know if we can.

“We’d have to find out if there are any offers out there, but I need to find out if we can do it because I don’t know if we can.”

Gillingham travel across the river off the back of a 2-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers at the Priestfield Stadium. The Gills are currently unbeaten in thirteen league outings and sit comfortably in tenth place.
