Southend United v Tranmere Rovers – Roots Hall Stadium – Sky Bet League One – Saturday 3pm

Southend United v Tranmere Rovers – Preview:

Reports of late payment of wages to players and staff have left long-suffering Southend United supporters again questioning the clubs fragile financial position and has heaped further gloom and doom over an already troubled Sky Bet League One campaign.

Chairman, Ron Martin, explained on TalkSport that there was a shortfall in accounts just before Christmas and suggested that it wasn’t an issue. However, fans have become increasingly concerned over the immediate future of the Blues, following a series of winding-up orders and money concerns in recent years.

Campbell – who reportedly worked under considerable difficult circumstances at Macclesfield Town last season – seemed surprised to hear that this wasn’t an unusual situation for the Roots Hall faithful to worry about: “It’s not a new thing at Southend? It’s not new?” he said.

Nevertheless, the former England defender shrugged off the clubs issues and insisted that getting the players prepared for matchday was his priority.

Speaking ahead of a visit from fellow strugglers, Tranmere Rovers, Campbell explained: “I think for me, again, it’s about getting ready and preparing the lads, really.

It’s game to game. It’s a Wednesday, it’s Tuesday, Saturday – it’s me preparing the guys in the best possible way

“All that other stuff that is happening, I can’t control it.

Although these issues, coupled with the teams continued struggles on the pitch, suggested spirits were low at Roots Hall, Campbell believed it was purely football issues which were of concern to the players.

“I think, for me, morale is a little bit dented because of just missing out on just winning games.

“When you’ve looked at the games, we’ve almost won games. It’s just a little bit of a lack in concentration here and there.

“Yes, winning games will change the confidence – that’s key for me, that we’ve not been before – out of sight in games. Now we are kind of insight of winning games, and that’s a good thing for me – you know, that’s a positive. And that is what we’ve got to taken on, now to the end of the season.

“We’ve got the possibility of winning games, we’ve just got to take our chances.”
