Accrington Stanley v Southend United – Wham Stadium – Sky Bet League One – Saturday 3pm
Accrington Stanley v Southend United – Preview:
Without a win in sixteen matches, recent financial hardship and a distinct lack of new signings in the January transfer window has once again left the long-suffering Roots Hall faithful down in the mouth of late.
Even a run which has seen Sol Campbell’s men draw four of their last five Sky Bet League One outings has done little to lift the gloom surrounding the Blues who now sit a massive fourteen points from safety.
But despite that mountain of woe, Campbell insisted Southend are doing their utmost to freshen up and improve their struggling squad.
“I think the main thing is, we are trying,” he explained.
“It is always difficult. We are trying to bring some fresh faces in – it’s not easy. Negotiations are not easy – you’ve got to get the right balance, really.
“There are some players that are being identified, but it is not easy in January time – but we are trying to bring them in as a club.”
When asked whether he thought there would be any new faces in the squad ahead of the trip to East Lancashire, Campbell responded: “I can’t see anything before Saturday, No.”
Speaking about the challenge Blues faced against a notoriously tough Accrington side, the former England defender added: “Like the challenges of every weekend. You’ve just gotta make sure we set our stall out, make sure we look after the threats and also we’ve got to make sure we play our football and take our chances.”
