Southend United 2-2 Rotherham United – Reaction

SOL CAMPBELL praised the character of his struggling Southend United side after they played out a punchy 2-2 Sky Bet League One draw to pick up only their seventh point of the campaign.

An own-goal from former Rangers defender, Rob Kiernan, handed promotion-chasing Rotherham a first-half advantage. However, Blues turned the game on its head inside three second-half minutes when Jason Demetriou netted from the penalty spot after Chiedozie Ogbene was adjudged to have handled – Then Sam Mantom sent the long-suffering home crowd wild with delight, firing Campbell’s me in front after Elvis Bwomono had fashioned an opening.

But Southend were unable to hang on and record their second league victory of the season. Freddie Lapado – who had previously served both the Blues and Colchester United – netted from close range to earn the Yorkshiremen a share of the spoils.

“Considering where Rotherham are and where we are, it’s a good point,” Campbell told www.southendunited.co.uk.

“We’ve had a lot of chances to come away with a win, we just needed to have a bit more belief and we would have bagged at least a couple more goals.

“When a goal like [Kiernan’s own goal] goes in, it’s a little bit deflating. You say to yourself: what else could go wrong? They didn’t really threaten us other than that.”

Campbell continued: “We defended well, we looked after their front guys because we didn’t want them to have too much space in front, especially on their free-kicks and set-plays, and then we’re not concentrating and we go 1-0 down.

“The main thing is we got in, dusted ourselves off and we showed some character. We had to, especially at the end as they had a lot of set-plays, corners and things like that and we had to have our wits about us.”

Southend United return to Sky Bet League One action on Saturday, December 21 when they take on fellow strugglers, Bolton Wanderers, at the University of Bolton Stadium (3pm).
