Essex trail Durham by 353 runs with ten first-innings wickets standing

Colin Ackermann’s impressive century was the highlight of an otherwise well-contested opening day of Essex’s LV= Insurance County Championship Division One match with Durham at the Seat Unique Riverside.

Ackermann’s inaugural three-figure knock for the hosts came off 231 balls during a 291-minute stint at the crease. Meanwhile, Ollie Robinson complimented the South Africans’ efforts by scoring 90 and David Bedingham similarly with a half-century.

Jamie Porter returned bowling figures of three for 57, while Sam Cook, standing in as skipper in place of expectant father Tom Westley, had 3/60. Shane Snater and Simon Harmer took two apiece. Durham was eventually dismissed in the ninety-second over for 358.

Cook again took the mantle of nightwatchman, joining Dean Elgar in the middle as Essex navigated the final two overs play of the day.

Essex’s on-loan wicketkeeper, Harry Duke – who snaffled two debut catches – spoke to the ECB Reporters’ Network: “I really enjoyed my first day with Essex,” he explained.

“It was good to get out there, they’re a great set of lads and it was really nice to get them out at the end. Hopefully, we can come back tomorrow and do well with the bat.

“The lads are so welcoming and I’ve had no complaints from playing against them in the past. It was nice to get off the mark with that first catch, you feel you’re set up for the day and I thought they bowled really well to peg it back in the afternoon session.

“I think it’s an attritional surface, it was quite a tough wicket at times and we had to battle hard at times. Simon Harmer is such a brilliant bowler and it was a great challenge to keep to him.”

Play resumes on Saturday at 11am.
