SOUTHEND SAXONS handed their supporters an early Christmas Day surprise with the news that Chris Vaughan and Nik Grier have signed new deals with the Warners Bridge outfit.
A number of the Saxons squad have recently committed their future to the club, much to the delight of Director of Rugby, Josh Ward.
Speaking to Yellow Sport about the two of his stalwarts, Ward enthused: “Both Nik and Vaughany committing their future to the club speaks volumes. Two experienced campaigners have both emphasised their desire to continue being a part of this project and emphasised their happiness at being at Southend Rugby Club.
“We strive to look after the player holistically here, their family and personal wellbeing not just the individual rugby player. The two families are highly valued here at Warners Bridge.
Ward continued: “Nik possesses an excellent skill set and gives us a real platform to work off a variety of different spaces at the lineout, his passion and leadership are important amongst a fairly young group of players.
“Vaughany is Vaughany, a stalwart, a workhorse who just puts his body on the line weekly and leads the group through his performance standards. He’s loved by everyone on and off the pitch at the club.
“People joke about age with these guys who believe it or not annoys me as I see them every week. They’re fit and in great condition, they know their bodies and manage them superbly well. Two massive signings for us.”
