COLCHESTER & EAST ESSEX celebrated promotion and the Shepherd Neame Essex League Division One title after holding their nerve to secure a draw with chief-rivals, Woodford Wells, at Monkhams Lane.

Needing just six points to ensure a swift return to the Premier Division, Colchester faced an uphill task after the home side posted 273/7d. Skipper Michael Todd scored 80 while Hugo Blogg was unbeaten on 73 as the home side piled on the runs.

And it began to look as if Colchester’s champaign would remain on ice as Woodford – led by Alexander Gilbert with 4/28 and Deven Solanki, 3/52, had the North Essex side teetering on 167/9.

However, Simon Fernandes (35*) and Ben Stephens (9*) held their nerve to bat out time, ensuring the draw and Colchester the points they required to put them out of reach.

Colchester & East Essex conclude their Shepherd Neame Essex League Division One campaign on Saturday, September 7 when Upminster are the visitors to Castle Park. Woodford Well will be looking to secure promotion with a win over Shenfield, who themselves still harbour hopes of a Premier Division place next season.

Points: Woodford Wells 12 Colchester 6
