Conte’s task is of a sizable proportion

Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur – Premier League – Stamford Bridge – Reaction

Chelsea 2-0 Tottenham Hotspur

It was another case of Stamford Bridge torture and provided Antonio Contes with further evidence of the chasm that has emerged between his former and current employers.

True, Chelsea has held the Indian sign over Tottenham for some years, and on this showing will continue to do some for a few more to come. Nevertheless, taking stock of what he has at his disposal, Conte acknowledged the gap in class but insisted there were positives.

“Today, for the performance I have to be proud of my players because we made a big effort and tried to do everything to get a big result,” the Italian explained.

“Then I have to think that in fourteen days we lost three times to Chelsea. It means there’s a different level between us and them.

“To lose three games in fourteen days means they are much stronger than you, as a team and as a squad.

“You have to accept this but only after a performance like tonight. Because we tried everything to get a big result here. But sometimes it’s not enough, especially when you play against this type of team. This club are on another level compared to us.”

Tottenham defended manfully before the interval and were dealt a harsh blow when Harry Kane’s strike was ruled out by referee, Paul Tierney after Thiago Silva went over somewhat easily. But were quickly undone after the restart with Hakim Ziyech and Thiago delivering the killer blows: “For sure, today was difficult for injuries and to make the starting eleven but at the same time, I’m proud of the performance of my players because I think we made a big effort against Chelsea,” Conte added.

“In the first half, the referee disallowed a goal and I was very clear with him because I think it’s best sometimes it’s to tell the referee in a polite way, to see this type of goal disallowed in England is incredible. Maybe in Italy 5fifty-fifty? But in England, it was incredible.”
