Sir Alastair Cook’s 75 was the highlight as Essex’s Bob Willis Trophy encounter with Hampshire finally got underway at Arundel Castle.

A saturated run-up at the Castle End of the ground put pay to the opening day and further inclement conditions meant on 47 overs were possible on the second with showers sending the players in shortly before the lunch interval and washing out the afternoon session.

However, Essex made the most of what time was possible. Cook 191-minute stint of 135 balls helping Essex to 146/2 at the close.

Paul Walter reached 43 before falling to Ian Holland courtesy of Tom Alsop excellent slip-catch. Essex skipper, Tom Westly, was snared in Lewis McManus’ gloves off Mason Crane having made 18. Play resumes on Monday at 11am.
