Sam Cook and Jamie Porter left the Lancashire top order in tatters as Essex seized control on day two of their LV=Insurance County Championship Division One encounter at the Emirates Old Trafford.

Cook claimed two wickets for five runs from his even overs, while Porter chipped in with 2/19 as Lancashire were reduced to 32/5 at the close of play, responding to Essex’s 391.

Shane Snater continued to impress, his single over culminating in a wicket maiden. Earlier, the Netherlands international scored a quickfire 71 off 82 balls, highlighting the visitors’ dominance.

Dan Lawrence, who had finished the opening day unbeaten on 100, added a further twenty before he was caught by Jimmy Anderson off a ball from Luke Wells. Meanwhile, Nick Browne had made a timely return to form, hitting 71 off 156 balls during his 214-minutes at the crease.
