Essex lead Nottinghamshire by 55 runs with nine second-innings wickets standing

Alastair Cook and Tom Westley navigated Essex away from danger after hosts Nottinghamshire had established a healthy first-innings lead on day three of their LV= Insurance County Championship Division One encounter at Trent Bridge.

Cook finished the day unbeaten on 87, while Westley was still there on 70 as Essex reached 199 for one – a lead of 55 – this after Notts had posted 442, giving them a lead of 144.

Matthew Montgomery proved to be Notts’ star turn, scoring 177 off 318 balls before he was trapped lbw by Matt Critchley. Ben Slater and Joe Clarke each contributed half-centuries as the hosts put a stranglehold on the contest. Critchley and Sam Cook each took three wickets for the visitors.

Earlier, former England skipper Cook hit 72 off 124 balls during a 184-minute stay at the crease. Meanwhile, Westley’s 66 came from 159 deliveries as Essex reached a first-innings tally of 298. Simon Harmer contributed a further 46 runs to the visitors’ cause. Brett Hutton took four for 69 for the home side, while Stuart Broad and Dane Paterson each claimed three. Play resumes on Sunday at 11am.
