Sam Cook claimed two wickets on a rain-affected first day at Lord’s.

Looking to add the Bob Willis Trophy to their recent impressive haul of silverware, Cook claimed 2/38 as he reached three figures in the first-class game. Meanwhile, Aaron Beard and Jamie Porter chipped in as Essex edged what play was possible due to the showers.

Zimbabwe-born Edward Byrom steadied the ship for Somerset, finishing the day unbeaten on 51 – his first half-century of the summer – helping his side recover from 53/3.

With modestly sunny conditions forecasted play is due to resume on Thursday at 10:30am.
