Alastair Cook scored the sixty-ninth first-class century of his career as Essex reached 299/3 on the opening day of their LV=Insurance County Championship Division Two encounter with Surrey at the Kia Oval.

Cook finished the day unbeaten on 140, hitting eighteen boundaries and facing 280-balls during his 368 minutes at the crease.

Dan Lawrence contributed 78 off 130, while Tom Westly fell just shy of fifty on an otherwise good day for the visitors.

Rikki Clarke, Jordan Clark and Will Jacks were the only Surrey bowlers to breakthrough. Play resumes on Monday at 10:30am.
