Alastair Cook scored a century in both innings for the first time in his career as Essex and Yorkshire shared the LV=Insurance County Championship Division One spoils at The Cloud County Ground.

The former England skipper followed his 107 off 268 balls, with an unbeaten 102 from 183 in a contest dominated by the batters.

Paul Walter saw and raised Cook’s first-innings ton with a maiden first-class three-figure score of his own. His 402-minutes in the middle gleaned 141 off 322 balls, a knock that included eighteen 4s and one huge 6. Meanwhile, Simon Harmer chipped in with 54 as Essex posted a sizable 403 – Jordan Thompson and Dom Bess each took three wickets for the visitors.

In response, Harry Brook continued his terrific early-season form, scoring 123. The Yorkshire right-handed batter has scored fifty or more in each of his innings this season. Dawid Malan reached 87, while England’s most recent outgoing captain, Joe Root, hit 75 as the visitors established a narrow first-innings advantage. Shane Snater and the impressive Sam Cook with three for 62 and 78 respectively.

But the result of the contest was already seemingly a foregone conclusion. Alastair Cook’s second ton was backed up by a morale-boosting half-century from Nick Browne as the contest petered out into a stalemate.
