Alastair Cook’s 68th first-class century ensured Essex had much the better of the opening day of their LV Insurance County Championship encounter with Worcestershire at New Road.

Cook’s 330 minutes in the middle and 263 balls faced gleaned 115 runs – a knock including seventeen boundaries. The former England skipper eventually chopped a delivery from Alzarri Joseph onto his off-stump.

Skipper Tom Westley complimented Cook’s efforts, finishing the day unbeaten on 75. Earlier, Essex lost Nick Browne, trapped lbw by Joseph for 26 – the right-arm fast-medium Worcestershire’s only success with the ball, taking 2/81. Play resumes on Friday at 11am.
