Following recent speculation, Rochford District Council has confirmed that it was contacted by the Home Office on June 20 regarding the potential use of a venue within the district to accommodate asylum seekers.
This project will provide initial accommodation while destitute asylum claimants have their Asylum Support application considered. If the application is successful, they will move on to dispersal accommodation.
The Home Office will be employing a private company to oversee the operation and the general care of the housed asylum seekers.
This national programme is entirely driven by the Home Office and Rochford District Council had no approval role in the decision to use the venue in this way.
As such, there is no additional financial burden on the council for the scheme.
