Colchester United v Wigan Athletic – Emirates FA Cup Second Round – JobServe Community Stadium – Sunday (12:30pm) – Preview
Ray Crawford is hoping that rejuvenated Colchester United can pull off an Emirates FA Cup upset when high-flying Sky Bet League One outfit, Wigan Athletic visit the JobServe Community Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The U’s put their recent troubles behind them by picking up four unlikely points out of a possible six on offer against promotion-chasing Exeter City and Newport County, and Crawford thinks his former club might now be in the mood to test themselves against higher-class opposition.
“It’s as good a time as any,” Crawford enthused.
“Something has clicked this past couple of weeks. I know one swallow doesn’t make a summer, but experience tells me when you have a bit of belief in yourself and those around you, anything can be achieved.”
Of course, Crawford doesn’t need a second invitation to recall the U’s famous fifth-round victory over Leeds United back in 1971. Nevertheless, he was quick to point out that Colchester have added to their cup catalogue since that February day, half a century ago.
“Only a couple of season’s ago, we had the League Cup run, beating Palace and Spurs. The current team must take energy and encouragement from those exploits. Some of them played in both matches. Wigan are going well, but we are capable of giving them a game.”
The former U’s frontman added: “It is still about building a bit of confidence and momentum. I’d love to see us get through and pull out one of the big teams. But if we can give Wigan a good game and make the fans proud, I’ll take that for a start.”
Ray Crawford’s prediction: Colchester United 1-1 Wigan Athletic
Jeevesie’s prediction: Colchester United 0-2 Wigan Athletic
