Crawford calls for cool heads from U’s

Colchester United v Doncaster Rovers – Sky Bet League Two – JobServe Community Stadium – Tuesday (7:45pm) – Preview

Colchester United are so close to securing their Sky Bet League Two status that they can almost taste it. Nevertheless, former U’s frontman, Ray Crawford, has called for cool heads as Danny Cowley’s men head into their penultimate match of the season against in-form Doncaster Rovers at the JobServe Community Stadium.

While Colchester missed an opportunity to ensure survival by losing by a goal to nil at Notts County, Tuesday’s opponents, Rovers’ came from two goals down to beat fellow play-off contenders Barrow by four goals to two and secure a ninth successive win.

Even if Colchester lose both of their remaining matches, fellow strugglers Sutton United must beat high-flying MK Dons on the final day, with a seven-goal swing directed the way of the South Londoners.

“It’s important to keep calm and don’t do anything stupid,” Crawford told Yellow Sport.

“Of course, we want to win the games, but as it stands, simply getting that point is the important target.

“Doncaster have been winning for fun and can get themselves into playoff contention with a win on Tuesday night. It’s not a damage limitation job for Colchester, but certainly mustn’t let the game run away from us.

“With goal difference in our favour, defending stoutly is going to be a priority. Bodies on the line, just as we saw in the last home game against Grimsby Town.”

Crawford added: “There’s pressure on both sides for very different reasons. Doncaster has the ‘nicer’ pressure, but being underdogs will suit us again.

“At times, we have proved that we can compete with the better teams in the league. Doncaster has to slip at some point. I’m hopeful it will be on Tuesday night so we can enjoy Saturday and look forward to better times with Danny and Nicky in charge next season.”
