Crawford calls for greater focus from U’s

Walsall v Colchester United – Sky Bet League Two – Banks’s Stadium – Saturday 3pm – Preview

Ray Crawford couldn’t believe it when he saw Colchester United had twice squandered the lead against struggling Oldham Athletic last weekend.

The U’s looked set for three Sky Bet League Two points thanks to Ben Stevenson’s opener and Callum Harriott’s spot-kick before the break. However, the Latics roared back through a penalty from Conor McAleny and Carl Piergianni’s leveller.

Miles Welch-Hayes restored the U’s lead, but once again, Oldham hit back through McAleny to claim a share of the spoils, leaving Crawford – along with every other U’s fan – frustrated at what might have been.

“We’d only been saying last week how tight Colchester have been, defensively,” Crawford bemoaned.

“The game highlighted how quickly things can turn if you switch off. Colchester had the points in the bag at 2-0. They even looked the most likely to add to the scoring at 3-2. It’s a bit disappointing, to be honest.

“The team has goals in it. We shouldn’t be sitting back on a two-goal lead. The manager wasn’t happy – I’d imagine the players learned that in no uncertain terms.

“In a league which will be tightly contested, this is a missed opportunity. I don’t want to be too hard on the players because they have started the season quite well. But I’d expect them back on the ball at Walsall on Saturday.

“The U’s face a Saddlers side, much similar to themselves, and unbeaten in their opening three league matches: “I don’t think there’s much between the teams. It will be a similar game to Barrow.

“But with the managers’ words ringing in their ears, I’d expect Colchester to come home with something – probably a point.”

Ray Crawford’s prediction: Walsall 1-1 Colchester United
Jeevesie’s prediction: Walsall 0-0 Colchester United
