Crawford calls for more bravery from U’s

Colchester United v Sutton United – Sky Bet League Two – JobServe Community Stadium – Tuesday (7:45pm) – Preview

Ray Crawford admitted he is concerned that Colchester United could follow their Essex neighbours, Southend United out of the EFL.

The U’s produced another dismal display at Port Vale over the weekend, slipping to a 3-0 defeat, leaving them hovering just three points above the dropzone.

“Our football isn’t entertaining, it’s not good to watch,” Crawford told Yellow Sport.

“Colchester invite teams onto us and create very few chances. I can see why the crowds a falling so alarmingly.

“I worry that nobody at the club is taking it seriously. We should be doing everything in our power to encourage people to the games. Supporters seem cheesed off. They don’t see any ambition in our football. We’ve got lucky and salvaged some games in the final minutes, but ultimately, what has gone before doesn’t excite the crowd. Something has to change.

“You want to give supporters no choice but to come. If the football was entertaining, they would start coming again. At the moment, staying in on a cold night or watching something on the telly appears to be more appealing than going to the matches. It’s very sad.

“Southend slipped out of the league after acting too late. It was allowed to drift for too long. This has a similar feel to it. I’m really concerned.”

The U’s face Sutton United in a rearranged Sky Bet League Two encounter on Tuesday evening. The game was originally scheduled earlier in the season, but postponed due to COVID concerns in the Sutton camp: “They were struggling back then but have picked up since then,” Crawford added.

“Sutton have lost their last two games, but they are still in contention. Their matches have largely been entertaining with lots of goals. Exactly what we are missing at Colchester right now.

“I’ve said before, this group of players are capable of much better. But we seem scared to take the game to anyone at the moment.

“We have two home matches this week. Tuesday is followed by a must-win game against bottom of the table Scunthorpe United. Failure to win at least one of these games will see the pressure ramped up on the players and manager. I just hope we can be brave and try to give the supporters something to be hopeful about.”

Ray Crawford’s prediction: Colchester United 1-1 Sutton United
