Crawford concerned as U’s continue to plummet

Tranmere Rovers v Colchester United – Sky Bet League Two – Prenton Park – Friday (7:45pm) – Preview

It was a frustrated Ray Crawford who spoke to Yellow Sport following Colchester United’s 2-0 Sky Bet League two defeat at the hands of Salford City last weekend.

The U’s were second-best throughout the contest. First-half goals from Brandon Thomas-Asante and Tom Elliott proved more than enough for the visitors, who also had Thomas-Asante sent-off in the latter stages after picking up two cautions.

“The only positive is that it wasn’t a bigger defeat,” the former U’s frontman told Yellow Sport.

“It’s another disappointing home performance and result. I’m not sure where to start, but Colchester clearly wasn’t good enough. It was another small crowd. People aren’t going to watch a losing team. Something has to change.

“We seem to play on the back foot at the JobServe Community Stadium – Almost like an away side, trying to contain the opposition. It has worked away, but one point from twelve on offer at home is woeful. We need to start getting at teams, not waiting for them to make the first move.”

The U’s head to in-form Tranmere Rovers on Friday evening, a team on the cusp of the play-off places having tasted defeat just once in their last five League Two outings: “It will be tough, but I see it as a similar challenge to the one we got from Barrow.

“The pressure is on the home side, plus we appear to be far more comfortable on our travels. I think Tom Eastman has to start. It was a big mistake from the manager to leave him out against Salford.

“We are worth a point and I think we’ll get one. But, once again, I’ll say it. Unless Colchester picks it up at home, we are going to get sucked into another relegation battle.

“Last season should have been enough of a warning to the clubs’ hierarchy that this can’t be allowed to happen again.”
