Crawford confused over U’s erratic start

Swindon Town v Colchester United – Sky Bet League Two – The County Ground – Saturday (3pm) – Preview

I think it’s fair to say that Ray Crawford was left baffled by Colchester United following their frustrating Sky Bet League Two defeat at the hands of Crawley Town at the JobServe Community Stadium.

The U’s remain without a home win to their name after Jack Payne’s decisive goal midway through the opening half: “We ran out of ideas,” Crawford told Yellow Sport.

“We spoke at the start of the season about making your home ground a fortress. Colchester seems to freeze in front of their own supporters. It’s very concerning.

“We started off reasonably well but never looked capable of getting back into it after the goal. We have a small, but talented group of players, but for whatever reason, we don’t seem to be clicking at the moment.

“I can’t really understand why? We have picked up points on the road and scored goals too. Is there a fear factor of playing at the JobServe?”

Colchester now face a trip to Swindon Town – a side without a win in three, but just a point outside the play-off places: “I’m hoping that we can pick up where we left off at Barrow,” the former frontman added.

“Perhaps the players don’t feel so much pressure away from home? They have largely experienced professionals – it shouldn’t affect them.

“Swindon will be up there at the end of the season. I’m hoping we catch them cold. A draw would be a decent return.

“Ultimately, I think we are missing creativity and steel in midfield. Noah Chilvers and Armando Dobra need to be starting the games. We need a bit of flair. We can’t afford to be chasing games all the time.

“As ever, I’ll stick my neck out for the boys. As I said, a point gives us a platform. But ultimately, we need to be able to back it up when we play at home.”

Ray Crawford’s prediction: Swindon Town 1-1 Colchester United
Jeevesie’s prediction: Swindon Town 1-0 Colchester United
