Crawford curses late luck but believes U’s are almost safe

Oldham Athletic v Colchester United – Sky Bet League two – Boundary Park – Friday 7pm – Preview

Ray Crawford was as frustrated as any Colchester United supporter that the U’s were unable to hold on for all three points against fellow Sky Bet League Two strugglers, Barrow on Monday.

However, the former frontman believes that point, coupled with the one gleaned at Bolton, has given the U’s a springboard towards safety following the appointment of Hayden Mullins as Interim manager with Paul Tisdale joining in an adversary role.

“We are still in trouble, but the whole situation appears to be a little more under control,” Crawford told Yellow Sport.

“We needed to see the Barrow game out and missed a couple of chances to do so. But I think one more win will probably be enough to keep us in the division.

“The team seem to have a little more cohesion since the new management team were installed. Sometimes a different voice in the dressing room is all you need. It gives some players a lift, a different perspective. It’s always a risk to change managers at this stage of the season, but it was a gamble Colchester needed to take.”

Colchester head to Oldham on Friday evening, Traditionally a happy hunting ground for the U’s. Indeed, the North Essex side are unbeaten in ten previous visits to Boundary Park and this would be a welcome time to extend that sequence: “We have a good record there but mustn’t take anything for granted. Despite our improvement, we’ve still only won once in 24 matches. That needs to change, but to be honest, I think it will be another draw and another small step away from the relegation zone.”
