Crawford expecting a tougher test from Clough’s Stags

Mansfield Town v Colchester United – Sky Bet League Two – One-Call Stadium – Friday 7pm – Preview

Eight goals and two derby victories. Ray Crawford was pleased to see Colchester United respond following their shock Emirates FA Cup exit at the hands of Marine.

Having hit Southend for six in the EFL Trophy, the U’s saw off Leyton Orient by the odd goal in three to move into the Sky Bet League Two play-off places. Nevertheless, the former frontman believes the North Essex side will face a tougher task when they visit a Mansfield Town side now under the guidance of Nigel Clough.

“We gave two great performances,” Crawford enthused.

“Obviously, I’m delighted to see the boys moving up the league. Having a goalscorer in the team is a huge boost. Jevani Brown has been superb and deserved the plaudits after working so hard to prove his worth to Colchester United.

“We now need to be consistent, although I think Friday’s game will be much harder than people might think.

“Mansfield got their first win last weekend and confidence will have been boosted by that. Nigel’s appointment has clearly had an effect on the players. I don’t expect them to be hanging around with those towards the bottom for too long.

“But the effect of a high-profile manager can work both ways. As well as lifting your own team, the opposition can sometimes look over and think ‘I want him to remember me’ – It can be a double-edged sword.

“I believe we should be heading up there confident of taking something from the game. I’d love all three points, although a draw wouldn’t be the end of the world and that’s how I think it will pan out.”

Ray Crawford’s prediction: Mansfield Town 1-1 Colchester United
