Crawford impressed by battling U’s

Bradford City v Colchester United – Sky Bet League Two – University of Bradford Stadium – Saturday (3pm) – Preview

Colchester United put up a gallant dispaly before exiting the Carabao Cup at Sky Bet Championship side Cardiff City on Wednesday and their former striker, Ray Crawford believes they displayed sufficient evidence to suggest they are ready for Saturday’s League Two opener at Bradford City.

The U’s are playing catch-up after their scheduled opening game of the campaign against Swindon Town was washed out: “It was disappointing to lose the first game to the weather, but I thought the boys did fantastically well at Cardiff, fighting back to draw the game and take it to penalties,” he told Yellow Sport.

“Of course, from there, it is a lottery. We missed our kicks, we’re out of the caup. We move on. But I think the players will now head to Bradford, confident that they can take something from the game.”

Bradford City were beaten by a goal to nil at Crawley Town in their opening league fixture but are expected to be amongst the front runners come the end of the season.

“People are talking Bradford up as promotion contenders, but that’s where we want to be. I think Ben Garner has shaped a useful squad of players. If we can get something from games like this then those people will soon take notice of us.

“Samson Tovide was red-carded at Cardiff. He’s a talented lad and will be a big miss. But I think we now have a group of footballers ready to come in and grab an opportunity.

“We have a couple of big games in the next few days, at Bradford, then at home to AFC Wimbledon. It is a chance to put down a marker and see where we are.”

Ray Crawford’s prediction: Bradford City 1-1 Colchester United
