Crawford insists it’s a must-win for U’s

Sutton United v Colchester United – Sky Bet League Two – VBS Community Stadium – Saturday (3pm) – Preview

Ray Crawford has urged Colchester United to swiftly find the ruthless streak that will prepel them away from the Sky Bet League Two relegation zone.

The U’s failed to put away ten-man Accrington Stanley over the weekend. Riley Harbottle’s own-goal cancelled out Noah Chilvers’ opener for the U’s. Stanley’s Brad Hills sent off for lashing out at Tom Hopper a minute after the restart.

Speaking to Yellow Sport ahead of the U’s huge basement battle with botto of the table Sutton United, Crawford said: “On the plus side, we picked up a point against a fairly strong team.

“But it should have been all three. As I said last week, the football has improved but we are still struggling to overcome the same issues.

“With Sutton, Forest Green and Grimsby all losing, we actually went up a place. But we can’t rely on the others losing all the time. We need to take things into our own hands.”

And Crawford expected his former side to take the initiative, starting this weekend at Sutton: “It’s a must-win game,” he added.

“We’ll have a big support there. It is up to the players to turn it on, find aruthless streak and put away one of our rivals.

“Sutton haven’t won any of their games since Steve Morison took charge – I think it is nine? We have a seven point advantage over the bottom two. We need to extend that and take the pressure off ourselves.”

Crawford offered praise to last weekends goalscorer, Chilvers, saying: “Noah has had a bit of stick from the supporters, which I don’t think is fair.

“He loves the club and still celebrated his goal with the fans behind the goal. You can see he wants to get it right and do well for Colchester. I hope some of the supporters can see that and cut him some slack.

“If we are to pull away from the relegation places, we will need an in-form Noah Chilvers. On his day, he is a potential match-winner. It wouldn’t surprise me if that was the case on Saturday at Sutton.”

Ray Crawford’s prediction: Sutton United 0-1 Colchester United
