Barrow v Colchester United – Sky Bet League Two – Holker Street – Friday (7:45pm) – Preview

Ray Crawford was as frustrated as any Colchester United supporter following the postponement of last Saturday’s Sky Bet League Two encounter with bottom of the table Sutton United at the JobSever Community Stadium.

COVID concerns, as well as international call-ups, hit the visitors squad and although Crawford fully understood the game couldn’t take place, he couldn’t help thinking the U’s had been deprived an opportunity to continue their recent unbeaten league run.

“Obviously, we send our best wishes to the Sutton boys hit by the illness and hope they are back playing soon,” Crawford told Yellow Sport.

“But I do believe we would have won this game. That would have pushed us up into the top half of the table and built momentum.

“We are speaking ahead of the Papa John’s Trophy game with Gillingham on Tuesday. I don’t think the outcome of that game will have any bearing on what happens on Friday at Barrow. The break for some players will have done them good. But some footballers just want to keep playing. They wouldn’t have enjoyed sitting it out on Saturday.”

Looking ahead of the trip to Cumbria, Crawford added: “They had a great result at Oldham Athletic and appear to have improved after struggling a little last season.

“Barrow want to make up for lost time. They spent fifty years outside the Football League and the fans were unable to watch once they got back due to the pandemic. Now they are reunited, the whole town has got behind the football team. I think they could push for a play-off place. Although, I’m sure consolidation would be acceptable as they look to put down foundations back in the league.

“It will be a very tough game for the U’s. I think we can match them and I’ll back the boys to get a share of the spoils and extend the unbeaten league run to four.”

Ray Crawford’s prediction: Barrow 1-1 Colchester United
Jeevesie’s prediction: Barrow 0-0 Colchester United
