Crawford is concerned that the gap is closing

Colchester United v Stockport County – Sky Bet League Two – JobServe Community Stadium – Saturday (3pm) – Preview

Ray Crawford was satisfied with Colchester United’s share of the Sky Bet League Two spoils at Salford City but is concerned that their advantage over the bottom two is closing following another dramatic evening toward the bottom of the table.

Bradley Ihionvien’s second-half goal earned the U’s a point in the North-West but with Sutton United winning and Forest Green Rovers playing out a 1-1 draw with Wrexham, the U’s find themselves only five points and two placed above the dropzone.

“We are clearly harder to beat, but desperately need to find a way to win,” Crawford told Yellow Sport.

“I’m concerned that we are getting dragged back in, what with Sutton and Forest Green getting their second wind, so to speak. Also, we need to close the gap on fifth-bottom Doncaster Rovers. The last thing we want is to head into the final furlong of the season stuck in a mini-league of four teams, two of which will go down.”

Crawford continued: “We just need to be a little more ruthless and turn one or two of those draws into wins. Everyone can see that. I think a couple of wins will settle everyone down and steady the ship further.”

Colchester faces promotion-chasing Stockport County at the JobServe Community Stadium on Saturday: “Having called upon the players to be ruthless and get a win, in the great scheme of things, a point against Stockport would be a good result,” Crawford added.

“The only problem is that we can’t afford to keep drawing these matches. The Cowley’s have had a good opportunity to see what they have in the squad and will no doubt set us up accordingly. Stockport are without a win in four and might have a seed of doubt in their minds.

“It’s going to be a nervy few weeks for the Colchester support. They’ve been here far too many times in recent years. I hope we can pull through this and look forward to more pleasant concerns next season.”
