Colchester United v Stockport County – Sky Bet League Two – JobServe Community Stadium – Tuesday (7:45pm) – Preview

Ray Crawford rued a missed opportunity for Colchester United but insisted they displayed enough spirit during Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Wrexham to suggest they can pull clear of the Sky Bet League Two relegation zone.

Max Cleworth’s late header saw the U’s slip to their twentieth defeat of the season, leaving them in the dropzone. And it doesn’t come any easier with league leaders Stockport County next up at the JobServe Community Stadium.

“It’s fine margins again,” Crawford told Yellow Sport.

“We have got away with it somewhat, with Sutton and Forest Green both losing. But Grimsby won, which almost leaves us in a threeway shootout with the other two to avoid the drop.

“Again, the effort can’t be criticised, but we need something extra right now. A goal threat, a ruthless streak. Somebody needs to stand up and be counted.

Crawford continued: “As I’ve said before, we can’t prioritise matches. We don’t have that luxury. But neither do Sutton and Forest Green. It is in our hands. It is up to the players to get us out of trouble.

“Stockport is going to be even harder. They only need four points to secure promotion. It’s a pressure game, but much more rewarding for the visitors.

“Similarly to Wrexham, we know they have the greater quality. We have to match them for sheer effort all over the pitch.

“We are huge underdogs, but I won’t give up on my old club. They are capable of frustrating Stockport and snatching something from the game. I know some supporters will question that, but right now, these boys need us to back them and get us out of trouble.

“Of course, there is life after the EFL. We all know that. But rebuilding next season in League Two will be far easier on the Cowley brothers than persuading better footballers that their futures lie in the non-league.”

Ray Crawford’s prediction: Colchester United 1-1 Stockport County
