Liverpool v West Ham United – Premier League – Anfield – Saturday (5:3pm) – Preview

Brian Dear was left frustrated by West Ham United’s Emirates FA Cup fifth-round exit at Southampton and is now concerned that Saturday’s Premier League trip to Liverpool already appears somewhat ominous.

The Hammers went down 3-1 at St Mary’s: “We gave away the first two goals at times when we were on top,” the former frontman told Yellow Sport.

“Admittedly, the boy has struck the first one really well. But overall, it was a sloppy performance. I was disappointed because I thought we’d got that out of our system against Wolves. But now that momentum has been lost ahead of one of the hardest games of the season.”

Indeed, West Ham have only won once at Anfield in almost six decades. A 3-0 triumph back in August 2015. The Reds currently sit second in the table and have won their last six league matches: “It’s difficult to see us getting anything there,” Dear added.

“Defensively, we looked fragile at Southampton. That doesn’t bode well when you are about to face a team that has already scored seventy goals in the Premier League this season.

“I’m just hoping that we can retain the ball for as long as possible and make it difficult for Liverpool. But they have so many exceptional players. How do you do that?

Dear pointed to the Hammers 3-2 victory over Liverpool at the London Stadium in November. We got right in their faces that day. made it uncomfortable and have teh crowd right behind us. It was a terrific game and proved that they are beatable.

“But I fear that the mindset has changed lately. Do the players believe they can go to Anfield and upset the applecart?

“I know the players will give it everything they’ve got. But personally, from what I’ve seen lately, I think it’s a bit out of reach.”

Brian Dear’s prediction: Liverpool 3-0 West Ham United
