Daggers draw at York

York City v Dagenham & Redbridge – Vanarama National Lague – LNER Community Stadium – Report

York City 1-1 Dagenham & Redbridge

Despite Jake Hessenthaler’s header putting Dagenham & Redbridge 1-0 up in the eleventh minute, Ryan Fallowfield’s equaliser for York City just before half-time ensured the spoils were shared in a 1-1 draw at the LNER Community Stadium.

Ben Strevens made just one change to the starting line-up following Daggers 7-1 win at the Chigwell Construction Stadium on Saturday, with Freddie Sears replacing the injured Inih Effiong.

The game began with half chances for both sides before former Gillingham midfielder Hessenthaler nodded Dion Pereira’s in-swinging corner past Minstermen keeper George Sykes-Kenworthy to give Daggers an early lead.

Just moments later, the visitors had a wonderful opportunity to make it 2-0 when Ryan Hill got away down the left-hand side before squaring the ball to Sears to fire inches wide of the post.

With their first real chance of the match, York went close to an equaliser when Adam Crookes headed goalwards from a corner, only for Sam Ling to head the ball off the line to maintain the Eastenders 1-0 lead.

Despite the half progressing with few chances for either side, the Minstermen got themselves back on level terms in the forty-third minute when Danny Amos beat his marker to fire a pinpoint cross into the six-yard box for Fallowfield to head home past Elliot Justham to make it 1-1 at the break.

Although York looked the livelier of the two sides following the resumption, they failed to turn their superior possession into chances and it was Daggers who came closest to taking the lead, when following a corner, Harry Phipps’ header was flicked against the crossbar by Josh Rees.

Ten minutes from the end, the Minstermen also had a great chance to win the game when Will Smith volleyed narrowly over the bar from just inside the penalty area.

With both sides failing to create any further clear-cut opportunities in the dying minutes of the game the game wound down towards its inevitable conclusion. The draw was the Minstermen’s fourteenth of the season – the most in the division, leaving them three points above the relegation places, whilst by virtue of the point, Daggers move up into eleventh place.
