Daggers edge closer to play-off places

Dagenham & Redbridge v Solihull Moors – Vanarama National League – Chigwell Construction Stadium – Report

Dagenham & Redbridge 2-1 Solihull Moors

Dagenham & Redbridge’s Inih Effiong, signed in mid-week from Aldershot Town, scored twice on his debut as Daggers closed in on the play-off places with a 2-1 win over Solihull Moors at the Chigwell Construction Stadium.

It was Moors who had the first chance of the match when Bartosz Cybulski knocked Ben Coker’s cross wide in the seventh minute and Coker was involved again minutes later when James Clarke nodded another of his crosses just over the bar.

Twenty minutes in, Daggers Omar Mussa found Junior Morias in space only for him to shoot directly at Moors keeper Ryan Boot, with Effiong’s long-range effort then flying just wide of the post shortly after.

Daggers’ breakthrough came just after the half-hour mark when after his initial free-kick had been blocked by the wall, Effiong regained possession to strike the ball sweetly past Boot into the bottom left corner to make it 1-0.

Cybulski drew the visitors’ level just before the break when he crashed Andrew Dallas’ cross into the top corner, much it has to be said, against the run of play.

After a scrappy start to the second half during which neither were team able to create any clear-cut opportunities, Daryl McMahon’s side restored the lead in the seventy-third minute when Effiong’s twenty-five-yard screamer flew past Boot and into the top of the net.

With Daggers continuing to press forward, they almost scored a third when Morais cut in from the right to see his fiercely struck half-volley tipped over by Boot, only to go close again when Harry Phipps’ header was cleared off the line just minutes from time and although Moors mounted a late onslaught, they could not find a way through as the home side deservedly held on to claim the points.
