Dagenham & Redbridge 3-2 Sutton United
DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE booked their New Year Buildbase FA Trophy trip to Notts County, after a dramatic extra-time win, on Tuesday night.
Despite taking a spectacular lead through Joan Luque, the east Londoners seemed to have succumbed to Sutton sub., Omar Bugiel’s double.
But, in the second period of extra time Daggers found another gear and progressed thanks to another Luque strike, before Mitch Brundle settled the tie.
Mirroring the National League clash, of three weeks ago, the visitors dominated, with defenders, Ben Goodliffe and Louis John going closest, before the break, as the hosts’ punchless attack barely troubled United keeper, Nick Tzanev.
Perhaps, the hosts needed a half-time reminder that this was, indeed, a cup tie. And, as per the November encounter Daggers’ positive post-turnaround response reaped almost instant dividends when Luque’s stunning 52nd-minute curler completely deceived Tzanev.
Luque’s opener visibly stunned the visitors and barely three minutes later a Ben Wyatt pass saw the Spanish wideman feed Joe Quigley, but the hitman, under pressure from Tzanev blazed well wide from only ten yards out.
A double Sutton substitution then worked wonders. Barely on the pitch for a minute, a foul on Bugiel, after defensive indecision, saw referee, Carl Brook point immediately to the spot and the supersub sent Harry Seaden completely the wrong way from the spot.
However, a frantic finale saw both sides go close, with Tzanev expertly tipping over Toby Stevenson’s 81st-minute drive before Alex McQueen wasted an excellent chance three minutes from normal time.
Right on full-time John then wasted an excellent opportunity, heading against the bar from a Milsom flag-kick, with Seaden stranded.
Three minutes stoppage time failed to separate these sides. So, the 417-strong crowd were then braced for 30 minutes of extra-time.
Sutton took control, after the short interval, and from Kyel Reid’s 101st minute enterprising run, his shot was only parried by Seaden and that man, Bugiel bundled the loose ball home.
With nothing to lose, and with the pendulum swinging the hosts’ way, Luque grabbed his second with a smart finish from sub., James Dobson’s fine bye-line cross, on 115 minutes.
Unbelievably, but against a visibly tiring Sutton – unable to use a fourth sub. – Luque’s fine run and pass saw sub., Bagasan Graham feed Brundle, who – on 110 minutes – smashed home through a sea of bodies.
