Torquay United v Dagenham & Redbridge – Vanarama National League – Plainmoor Stadium – Report

Torquay United 1-2 Dagenham & Redbridge

By Dave Bishop

Despite Aaron Jarvis putting struggling Torquay United into the lead just before the break at Plainmoor, Inih Effiong, having earlier netted from the spot in the seventy-eighth minute, scored again deep into stoppage time to seal a dramatic 2-1 win for Dagenham & Redbridge and keep their play-off hopes alive.

With the Gulls in the ascendency early on, with seventeen minutes gone, captain Asa Hall got onto the end of Jack Stobbs’ perfectly delivered cross, only glance to his header wide of the post.

Just three minutes later, Stobbs let fly with a rasping twenty-yard effort which Daggers keeper Josh Strizovic did very well to scramble across to reach and palm the ball behind for a corner.

Torquay took the lead in the second minute of stoppage time when after Mo Sagaf lost possession, Jarvis picked up the loose ball to unleash a twenty-yard piledriver past Strizovic’s despairing dive to spectacularly send the Gulls in 1-0 up at half-time.

Despite Torquay having been the better of the two sides throughout the match, Daggers were quietly starting to get into the contest more and following a counterattack, Ross Marshall was adjudged to have fouled Sydney Ibie in the area and Effiong fired home the resultant spot-kick kick to make it all-square with twelve minutes left.

With Torquay working hard and continuing to push forward, they thought they had retaken the lead when new signing and former West Ham striker Frank Nouble headed home from close range, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside.

Despite being outplayed for much of the match, with the last play of the afternoon and in the fourth minute of stoppage time, Effiong ran on down the left side before cutting into the Gulls penalty box to drill the ball past Halstead to a seal memorable win for Daggers at the death.
