Dagenham & Redbridge v Dorking Wanderers – Vanarama National League – Chigwell Construction Stadium – Report
Dagenham & Redbridge 2-1 Dorking Wanderers
Inih Effiong netted twice – the second deep into stoppage time at the end of the match – as Dagenham & Redbridge came through to take the points in a 2-1 win over Dorking Wanderers after a dramatic finish at the Chigwell Construction Stadium.
Daggers started brightly and went close twice in the opening minutes with Sydney Ibie testing keeper Harrison Male with a speculative low drive before Jake Hessenthaler’s header from Ibie’s cross forced Male into action again just after.
With Ibie constantly threatening down the left-hand side, he once again turned provider after beating his man to cross and set up a fine opportunity for Shiloh Remy, only for the former Eastbourne Borough midfielder to fire wide of the post.
Daggers continued to dominate after the break with Effiong twice going close in the opening five minutes of the half, however on the hour the East End side finally and deservedly took the lead after Male’s save from the second of two Frank Vincent efforts’ was deflected back to Effiong to steer the ball into the net and make it 1-0.
Effiong had a further opportunity to double Daggers’ lead in the eightieth minute when he managed to get his head to Hessenthaler’s pinpoint corner – only to see the chance sail inches wide of the upright.
With the game into the ninetieth minute, Wanderers were awarded a penalty by referee David Mcnamara and although Daggers skipper Elliot Justham did well to save Seb Bowerman’s spot kick, Josh Taylor following up slammed home the rebound to make it one apiece.
The late equaliser seemed to have ensured that the game would end all square but just as time seemed to have run out, Sam Ling’s long throw found the outstanding Effiong to fire home his second goal of the match to seal a thrilling win for Daggers, who now move up into fifteenth place in the table – six points above the relegation places.
Dagenham & Redbridge return to Vanarama National League action again on Saturday when Phil Brown’s Kidderminster Harriers are due to visit the Chigwell Construction Stadium (3pm).
