Dear calls for togetherness and positivity ahead of Magpies test

West Ham United v Newcastle United – London Stadium – Premier League – Saturday 8pm – Preview

Brian Dear has called for togetherness ahead of West Ham United’s opening Premier League match with Newcastle United at teh London Stadium on Saturday evening.

Unsurprisingly, Hammers supporters have caused an uproar following the sale of talented winger, Grady Diangana, to West Bromwich Albion, while skipper, Mark Noble took to social media to express his own frustration over the move. And despite various other rumour of discontent behind the scenes being some way off the mark, Dear insisted the team must adopt something similar to a siege mentality to get focused on the job in hand.

“Everything must be focused on Saturday evening,” Dear told Yellow Sport.

“Whether we like it or not, what’s done, is done, we can’t change that. Unquestionably, the squad needs strengthening, but what we have proved capable at the tail end of last season. For the time being, they must do that again.

“Newcastle has done well against us recently and having signed Callum Wilson, a striker who loves to score against West Ham, we know it’s going to be tough again. But we do have some quality of our own. Players like Tomas Soucek, Jarrod Bowen, Declan Rice and Michail Antonio are all capable at this level. We need them to hit the ground running to ensure we don’t spend the season playing catch-up again.

Dear added: “Ultimately if you struggle towards the bottom, year in, year out, at some point your luck will run out. We need some positivity. Taking something from the game on Saturday will be a small step in the right direction.”

Brian Dear’s prediction: West Ham United 1-1 Newcastle United
Jeevesie’s prediction: West Ham United 2-2 Newcastle United
