Dear concerned for shattered Hammers

Brentford v West Ham United – Premier League – Brentford Community Stadium – Sunday 2pm – Preview

Brian Dear is concerned that West Ham United’s wafer-thin squad are suffering from burnout but commended David Moyes’ men for their fighting spirit which has kept them in with a chance of Europa League progress and a top-six Premier League finish.

Following their European exploits on Thursday evening, the Hammers head to London rivals, Brentford on Sunday. The Bees, having put down a huge marker with a resounding 4-1 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last weekend.

“It’s going to be might tough for us against an all-action Brentford side,” Dear told Yellow Sport.

“I’ve got to give it to our lads. They battled against Lyon despite playing with ten men and putting up with a questionable refereeing performance.

“But we did look tired. The lads have lifted themselves off the canvas several times this season, but as a long season gets to the business end, that becomes harder and harder.

“As far as Europe is concerned, it isn’t over but it will be difficult. In the meantime, we must concentrate on a Brentford team that will be right up for it.”

Dear continued: “I watched the Bees thrash Chelsea on the television. You couldn’t help but be impressed with Thomas Frank’s team. They look particularly powerful in attack. Ivan Toney and Bryan Mbeumo particularly impress me, while bringing in Christian Eriksen was a masterstroke. Almost like the missing piece of the jigsaw.

“I’m hoping that their win at Chelsea will be followed by a touch of after the Lord Mayor’s show. We are capable of getting something from the game. But energy reserves are low. Mentally and physically we are starting to ask an awful lot from a squad with very little back-up.”

Brian Dear’s prediction: Brentford 1-1 West Ham United
