Manchester United v West Ham United – Carabao Cup third round – Old Trafford – Wednesday (7:45pm) – Preview
Brian Dear thought West Ham United competed well during Sunday’s Premier League defeat at the hands of Manchester United but was left concerned that they had missed an opportunity to put down a solid marker ahead of tonight’s Carabao Cup third-round showdown at Old Trafford.
Hammers led thanks to Said Benrahma’s deflected effort. However, Cristiano Ronaldo swiftly levelled, then former loanee, Jesse Lingard won it before substitute, Mark Noble saw his stoppage-time spot-kick saved by David de Gea.
“We deserved something out of the game,” Dear told Yellow Sport.
“It was a cracking game. The penalty incident has left me rather bemused because I don’t think Mark should have taken it. I also think United will now have more of an edge going into tonight’s game, having dealt us two late body blows at the weekend.
“No doubt, both managers will shuffle the pack. But despite our improvement, United’s strength in depth is still greater than ours.
“Obviously, we have a chance. It’s a one-off cup tie. We must continue with that level of performance. But if we want to challenge at the latter stages of these competitions, the minor details have to improve. On Sunday, we got several of those wrong.”
Brian Dear’s prediction: Manchester United 3-1 West Ham United
Jeevesie’s prediction: Manchester United 2-1 West Ham United
