Dear concerned that Hammers are running out of steam

Burnley v West Ham United – Premier League – Turf Moor – Monday 8:15pm – Preview

Injury-hit, tired-looking West Ham United slipped to their second successive Premier League defeat leaving Brian dear as concerned as any Hammers fan, that an otherwise excellent season might peter out disappointingly.

The East Londoners slipped against Chelsea last time out, leaving any lingering hopes of a top-four finish hanging by a thread. But with Declan Rice, Michail Antonio and Aaron Cresswell still absent, the former frontman is worried that a Europa League place could also slip through their fingers during the closing weeks of the season.

“Mistakes cost us against Newcastle, but we were tired-looking against Chelsea,” Dear told Yellow Sport.

“The red card to Fabian Balbuena was a joke, but it didn’t cost us the match. We lacked energy and don’t have the depth to change things.

“Chelsea deserved to win. But I don’t want people to think this season has been a failure because it hasn’t. I think we deserve a shot at the Europa League, but football doesn’t work like that. It’s ruthless – we need to find some energy to get us over the line.”

West Ham won’t find it easy at Burnley. Sean Dyche’s side having des[pelled any lingering relegation worries with a resounding 4-0 victory over Wolves at Molineux last time out.

“I don’t need to tell anyone how difficult it is going to Burnley, and the result at Wolves will have given them a tremendous boost.

“Player for player, I think we are a stronger group, but without the big players, we look vulnerable. We need to step up to the challenge and try to secure enough points for a top-six finish.

“I understand Declan is back in training, but the game might come too soon for him. In the meantime, the rest of the squad must take responsibility and ensure we finish the season well and give the returning fans something to look forward to next season.”

Brian Dear’s prediction: Burnley 1-2 West Ham United
