Everton v West Ham United – Premier League – Goodison Park – Friday 5:30pm – Preview

Brian Dear insisted that West Ham United can bring something back from in-form Everton on New Year’s Day.

Fourth-placed Toffees have won four on the bounce and are just three points behind leaders, Liverpool. However, Dear believes the resolute performance from David Moyes’ men at Southampton suggested they can stifle the Merseysiders threat and provide further evidence that they can sustain a place in the top half of the Premier League.

“I’d still like to see us provide more of a threat going forward, but we certainly have enough about us to frustrate them,” Dear told Yellow Sport.

“We looked fairly solid at St Mary’s. Craig Dawson had a decent game at the heart of the defence, while we were busy ensuring the Saints could find a killer pass, we snubbed out their creative players.

“Of course, that was achieved without us offering much as an attacking force. We conceded a lot of the ball and I understand why some of the supporters don’t appreciate that.

“But this team is still a work in progress. If we have to adopt different tactics to get results, then that’s fine. I still think the manager wants to alter the squad. There are players he would like to move on, allowing him to shape his own group.”

Dear spoke about the improvement at Everton: “It’s going to be a tough game. They have done ever so well. Carlo Ancelotti has given them a different perspective = they are capable of winning in different ways and should be respected as potential title contenders at this stage of the season.

“But we must go there with belief. I think we have that in the squad now. If we can add a little more quality in January, I think West Ham can make their first step towards regular top-ten finishes. Another platform for better times ahead.”

Brian Dear’s prediction: Everton 1-1 West Ham United
