Dear confident that Hammers have too much for Saints

Southampton v West Ham United – Premier League – St Mary’s Stadium – Saturday (3pm) – Preview

Brian Dear is super-confident that West Ham United will maintain their unbeaten start to the season at Southampton.

The Hammers followed up stylish wins over Newcastle and Leicester with a hard-fought draw against Crystal Palace. The latter result leaving the former frontman a little frustrated.

“I think perhaps we all underestimated Palace,” Dear told Yellow Sport.

“We had enough chances to win the game but could have ended up losing it. I guess a draw was a fair reflection. I was just frustrated that the 100 per cent record slipped as did our place at the top of the table.”

Nevertheless, Dear thinks the break, coupled with new signings ahead of the transfer window closing has given West Ham a strong hand.

“The new boys will make us much stronger,” Dear added.

“What with the Europa League coming up, we needed a bit more depth. Kurt Zouma provides us with a bit more steel at the back, while Nikola Vlasic and Alex Kral cover all bases in midfield. I’d still like to see another forward come in during the next transfer window, but Michail Antonio, Jarrod Bowen, Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals have goals in them. We look in pretty good shape.

On the trip to Southampton, Dear said: “They will be dangerous opponents. They are yet to win in the league but gave a good account of themselves against Manchester United at St Mary’s.

“I think some people have tipped them to go down this year, but that will only make them more determined. Nevertheless, I think we have more than enough quality to take all three points and keep the momentum building ahead of Europe and Manchester United the following week.”
