Dear insists Hammers can handle Ronaldo threat

West Ham United v Manchester United – Premier League – London Stadium – Sunday (2pm) – Preview

Brian Dear conceded that West Ham United face a huge task to stifle resurgent Manchester United when the pair go head-to-head in the Premier League on Sunday.

Both sides go into the London Stadium clash sporting an unbeaten start to their respective campaigns. However, the recent addition of Cristiano Ronaldo appears to have thrown the Red Devils back into the mix as potential title contenders.

“That lad Ronaldo looks like he could have a future,” Dear joked.

“I think we have all been impressed with David Moyes’ signings at West Ham, but United trumping City to bring Ronaldo back has to be the signing of the summer.

“Two goals on his debut against Newcastle lifted everyone around Old Trafford, although I must say, I’d have loved to have faced a goalkeeper like that every week – dropping one at his feet then letting one through his legs. Still, 677 goals in 899 matches is unbelievable. He will go down in history as one of the greatest players the world has ever seen.”

Nevertheless, Dear insisted West Ham have plenty to be positive about, adding: “Of course, it’s going to be that bit harder without Michail Antonio. But we are unbeaten as well. The team will be determined and we have also made some great additions to the squad before the transfer window closed.

“The pressure will be on Manchester United – All eyes are on them because they are now genuinely in the mix. They have crumbled before in front of the West Ham crowd, who undoubtedly will be up for it.

“The atmosphere and occasion will be terrific. I’m sticking my neck out and backing the boys to get a point.”

Brian Dear’s prediction: West Ham United 1-1 Manchester United
